Growing A Story
A six-week writing course in 2 hour writing sessions
With instructor Rebecca Wood Barrett
Location: Pemberton Public Library
October 19th to November 23rd (every Monday night starting at 7:00 p.m.)
Our lives are brimming with stories. Whether we are bursting to tell true-accounts, our memoirs, or fabulous fictions, they are all simply waiting to be written down. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? But how do writers recognize what is a good story idea? And once they begin to grow a story, how do they make it bloom?
Growing A Story is a six-week writing course in two-hour sessions that will show you how to ripen your ideas, and get them to thrive by understanding the fundamental craft elements of writing fiction and creative non-fiction.
Each week we’ll have a lecture on a craft topic including: What is Story, and How is it Different from an Anecdote?; Building Blocks of Fiction: including Exposition, Narrative Summary, Scene (Dialogue and Action); Creating Characters; Advancing Plot; Deciding on Point of View and Tense; The Writer’s Voice; and Where and How to Publish your Story.
Based on the lecture topics, we’ll work on exercises that will improve writing skills by focusing on one story that will evolve over the duration of the course. Since feedback and revision are fundamental to the writing process, students will have the opportunity to present their work for critique by their classmates. Homework assignments will be designed to keep you working on your story outside the class. In the final session, we’ll talk about writing markets and where to publish your story.
This is the perfect course for the apprentice writer seeking an encouraging environment to learn about the craft of writing, and grow their story. No previous writing experience is necessary.
To sign up for the course, which is offered for $120, go to COURSE REGISTRATION.
