Seminar for never-ever writers FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Green Circle creative writing seminars run Wednesdays from January 28 2009 December 23, 2009 Whistler, BC – In the eight years since it’s inception, the Vicious Circle, Whistler’s Writers Group, has had its share of noteworthy successes, with members work-shopping their way to publishing deals, literary awards, incorporation of their work into public art displays and publication in anthologies. All that success has proved as intimidating to some aspiring writers as the view down the Couloir is to a Bambi-legged beginner skier. In response, the Vicious Circle is hosting an entry-level writers’ workshop series this winter called Feeding the Seed: Growing the Brand New Writer. Says Whistler Writers Festival Director, and founder of the Vicious Circle, Stella Harvey, “We had an incredibly positive response from the seminars we ran in the fall that were geared at new or inexperienced writers. And a lot of feedback suggested hot demand for a program for new writers. We already have several people signed up.” The six week writing course will see 1.5 hour sessions roll out each Wednesday at Spring Creek Elementary school, under the tutelage of Whistler writer Rebecca Wood Barrett. Wood Barrett is an honours graduate in Film Studies from Ryerson, and recently undertook her Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing at UBC. She is a published short story writer, an award-winning filmmaker, a television producer with Resort TV and winner of the 2008 Postcard Jam, or as she modestly says, “a bit of a genre-crosser.” She’s also delivered several workshops at previous Whistler Writers Festivals, including How to Pitch, How to Write for Film, and Storyboarding your Short Film. Each week, participants in Feeding the Seed will work on brief assignments in class designed to feed and grow their writer’s voice and to keep the pen moving. Short homework assignments will be brought back to the group to workshop, and participants will also learn how to become a good reader and to constructively critique other people’s work, one of the most effective ways of starting to see one’s own writing objectively. A weekly lecture on the craft of writing, in addition to roundtable discussions on the practical aspects of being a writer, are bound to get the blood pumping for new writers, and see them up ready to tackle a whole mountain of terrain with their new found confidence. All genres are welcome. Says Wood Barrett, “Everyone has a story to tell. That story might come in the form of a poem, novel, screenplay, children’s book, short story, blog, memoir or creative non-fiction. This course is the chance to develop a sense of your own voice as a writer.” Only 15 spaces in total are available, and seats are filling up fast. To sign up for the course, which is offered for $120, go to www.theviciouscircle.ca. -30- Contact: Stella Harvey, Whistler Readers & Writers Festival Director, Tel: 604 932 4518, Stella25@telus.net |
